The formulas
- X% of Y: X ÷ 100 × Y. For example, 15% of 80 is 12.
- X is what percent of Y: X ÷ Y × 100. For example, 12 is 25% of 48.
- Percentage change: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. Going from 50 to 65 is a 30% increase.
A common mistake
Percentage changes don't cancel out. A price that rises 20% and then falls 20% ends up 4% lower than where it started, because the fall is taken from the higher price.
